Anyway .... fun stuff to toss around and discuss.
Most desktop pc's are used for work purposes Those use minimal hardware so those figures seems ok.

I still use a 17inch LCD... 1280*1024 is more than enough for me.. also I am sitting at 1-1.4 feet from my screen.. any bigger and I don't think it would be very enjoyable.

if u have one of the latest graphic cards and processors even idle u will be chewing at least 350w.
and up to 450w while gaming.
plus 100w for the lcd monitor......
thats a lot of money if u keep it on 24/7

Don't give me any enviroment crap as my country is to blame for only ~2% of the worlds emissions, so my emissions are less than 0.0000...ect...%

Electrical has 4 more years of school added on to what you think you know so much about from your high school physics course. He is not right. Look at the triangle. If you took a physics course and have never heard of a power triangle then your talking out your ass too.

Consider this:

(200 Watts × 4 hours/day × 120 days/year) ÷ 1000
= 96 kW per hour (kWh) × 8.5 cents/kWh
= $8.16/year

Find out how many watts your computer is, how long its on, how many days its on in a year, and how much youre paying for each kilowatt hour of use and you'll see what your spending. This applies to anything in your house unless you tapped into the feeders before the meter (like the marijuana grow-ops do)

EDIT: I wouldnt recommend tapping into the lines before the meter, though you get free energy, if your Supply Athoritity finds out they will be chapped.

I have actually had a computer almost catch on fire, the dust that had built up inside started smoking and it shut off. Keep you pc maintenance up.

You haven't used a Watt-meter, have you?

Seriously, a "normal"(not a GW-server lol) comp does not use 500W(real watts, not what the PSU manufacturers say)..

100W LCD ? Most are below 40W I think. Atleast there are 20inch-monitors draining 40W.

I read a thread about how much power comps drain on a comp-forum. Many ppl had bought their own meters and checked their computers. A comp with a quad core cpu and a 8800GT gfx card drained 100W when idle and 200W in load(I don't know what kind of load though). The PSU will waste ~20%(depending on how good PSU you have) of the power, so that makes it 80W for the comp in idle.

The reason comps "need" so much watts is because the companies don't want idiots suing them. If a comp needed 100-200W, they would say it needed atleast 400W.

Note that the majority of the PSUs can't handle what they're supposed to, so a 400W might just be the right choice for the 200W comp.. Or it might be the other way around
For an example, my friend's running a geforce 6600 (manufacturers say 300W minimum) on a 200W PSU without problems.

Spread the truth!

If you are in a climate where you are heating your house most of the time and you have a thermostat you are not saving the earth by switching your computer off. All the energy it uses is converted into heat and so your heating system needs to work less to maintain the temperature set by your thermostat. The only difference will be to your wallet since electrical energy generally costs more than burning gas or coal or oil for heat energy.
